SPARKS - HELLO YOUNG LOVERS

REVIEW BY MARTIN TRUKSA

Hello Young Lovers - Sparks

Sparks : Hello Young Lovers (Gut Records) 2006 :-

Every now and then, you stumble across an album that is so extraordinary, so exceptional, that you are forced to pinch yourself to ensure that you are not hallucinating.  Sparks 'Hello Young Lovers', is one such album.  To describe this collection of songs as a 'masterpiece' is an understatement!

So what makes
'Hello Young Lovers' so special?  Well for a start it does not just comprise ten individual songs, but is more like an opera, in which each song blends into the next.  The songs develop their own personalities and become entities unto themselves.

It takes a lot of guts to move away from making albums that people expect you to make to making an album that you want to make.  But Ron & Russell Mael have never been afraid to push the boundaries and turn convention on its head.  By recording
'Hello Young Lovers' in their own studio, Sparks were able to venture into the unknown and take risks in their search for the unexpected.  And, boy, this album is full of surprises!

'Perfume' is the most conventional song on the album and was the first single release:-

A follow up single, double A-side, 'Dick Around' / 'Waterproof', was released in September 2006.  The release coincided with a European tour and a scheduled TV appearance on 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross'.

The track
'Dick Around' is a ballad / waltz, with synthesised orchestral arrangements, but periodically transforms itself into a hard driving rock song.  The frequent tempo changes and operatic bursts are reminiscent of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

"All I do now is dick around,
When the sun goes up and the moon comes out,
When the leaves are green and the leaves are brown,
All I do now is dick around,
Dick around."

'Waterproof' is a classic Sparks song, bursting with melody, and the song progressively gathers pace and culminates in a crescendo of swirling voices.  Pure heaven!

Every song on
'Hello Young Lovers' is unique.  When recording the album, the Maels were clearly content to let the 'beast' build itself, and the final result is greater than the sum of the parts.  This is probably Sparks' most accomplished album to date.  Well, let's not beat about the bush .... this album is SHIT HOT!
